As a country, we know good grass is important for our farmers, so we’ve invested years of research into improving grass genetics, quality and how we grow it.The New Zealand dairy industry and Fonterra’s Farm Source team has a strong support network of agronomists who support farmers in effective grass management.
Grass is a natural food source for cows and cows supplying milk to Fonterra New Zealand consume a diet that is on average 96% grass.
We know this because our New Zealand Fonterra farmers keep detailed farming records and monitor their cow’s diet and feed consumption.
Our New Zealand pasture is mostly made up of clover and perennial rye grass. When we talk about our cows’ grass-fed diet, we also include grass silage, hay, and forage crops.
